The schooling system in Japan is quite different from that in the United States. In Japan, education is based on a four-year university system. The traditional four-year system takes students to high school for two years. It is followed by three years of high school and after that they go to a two-year university.

In primary school there is a headmaster who is responsible for supervising all classes. He takes care of the discipline in each class as well as developing and coordinating the curriculum of the class. He also develops special programs such as music, dance, drama, and sports.
In junior high school there is another headmaster in charge of the classes. In elementary school there is a school psychologist who supervises all students’ emotional, social, and academic development. She works in conjunction with the regular teachers.
In high school there is a school counselor who works with the students of the same sex as well as students who have learning disabilities. He works with the students and he plays a significant role in helping students to cope with their school problems. He can also help students who have some mental problems such as behavioral problems, emotional disorders, and depression.
There are thirteen different areas of learning in Japan. Students learn about the four different subjects in the Japanese schools namely the general subjects, subjects for academic skills, subjects for intellectual growth, the culture and society subjects, and the arts.
In the United States there are four major areas of study such as the humanities, the natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts. As in Japan, all these subjects are taught in different grades, depending on the age of the student.
