Mannan Bhuiyan passes away

Former secretary general of the BNP Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan died of lung cancer at 12:01am on Wednesday at a hospital in the city. He was 67.

The first namaz-e-janaza of Mannan Bhuiyan was held at about 11:15am at the South Plaza of Parliament building while the second namaz-e-janaza at Baitul Mokarram around 1:40pm.

Several ministers, parliamentarians, leaders and workers of different political parties attended the janaza.

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hussain, party standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, former presidents Abdur Rahman Biswas and Badruddoza Chowdhury; former law minister Abdul Matin Khosru and former post and telecommunications minister Barrister Aminul Haque; Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury; CPB President Manjurul Ahsan Khan and General Secretary Muzahidul Islam Selim; and singer Fakir Alamgir were also present.

He will be buried at his home village in Narshingdi following the third janaza in the afternoon.

After the second namaz-e-janaza, Khandaker Delwar Hossain said, “Mannan Bhuiyan is now above everything. The people of the country and its history will always remember his contribution in the arena of politics.”

Bhuiyan had undergone medical treatment since May 31 at Singapore National University Hospital.

The former LGRD minister was brought back in Bangladesh on July 7 and was on life-support at the intensive care unit of the Square Hospital since his return.

Bhuiyan served as BNP secretary general for 11 years since 1996. Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia expelled him before she was arrested during the tenure of the last caretaker government in September 2007.

President Zillur Rahman, Khaleda and Delwar expressed their condolences at the death of Bhuiyan.
