With the slogan “Sangeet Swajon Esho Mili Shurer Badhoney,” Bangladesh Sangeet Shongothon Shamonnoy Parishod (BSSSP) and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) celebrated World Music Day 2010 on June 21 at Central Shaheed Minar premises and National Theatre Hall of BSA.
Veteran Nazrul Sangeet artiste and exponent Sohrab Hossain formally inaugurated the programme at Shaheed Minar. Noted artistes Fahim Hossain, Fatema Tuz-Zohra and Indra Mohon Rajbongshi, among others, attended the assembly.
Offering flowers at the Shaheed Minar, putting forth a proposal to mourn musical personalities who have passed away in recent times, rakhi bandhon and group renditions of songs marked the programme. The programme was presided over by Tapan Mahmud, president of BSSSP. General secretary of the organisation, Bishwajit Roy, read out the declaration for this year.
Later, a procession was brought out from Shaheed Minar, heading towards BSA, where eminent cultural personalities spoke and a number of musical troupes performed.
The celebration at BSA was presided over by Director General of BSA, Kamal Lohani. Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad was the chief guest at the event. President of International Theatre Institute Worldwide, Ramendu Majumdar; MD and CEO of BRAC Bank, Syed Mahbubur Rahman, spoke as special guests at the discussion.
Renowned lyricist Rafiquzzaman, seasoned dancer Laila Hasan, theatre personalities Jhuna Chowdhury and Mannan Hira also spoke on the occasion.
Artistes from a number of music troupes performed Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, folk, adhunik songs and more at the event.
Violin Association of Bangladesh staged an instrumental presentation of the melancholic “Raga Shibranjoni.” All elements of the raga like alap, sthayi, antora, taan, jhala and tehai were highlighted in the performance.
Artistes of Shurer Dhara, Dharmorajik Lalitokala Academy, Boitalik, Geetanjoli, Rabiroshmi, Rabirag, Protiti, Wrishobh, Mridanga and Nandan performed Tagore songs “Esho Shyamol-o Shundor-o,” “Mon More Megher Shongi,” “Sawan-o Gagan-e,” “Tumi Jey Shurer Agun,” “Neel Naboghoney Ashar Gagoney” and more.
Artistes of Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad and Dolonchapa rendered Nazrul compositions “Shubhro Shamujjal Hey Chiro Nirmol” and “Moner Rong Legechhey” on the occasion.
